Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Paris began on July 13. An important meeting was held between the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) regarding the purchase of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets for the Navy, and three Scorpene submarines for the force.
The Defense Acquisition Council, headed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the proposal and an announcement on the acquisition of the Rafale M aircraft is expected during the Prime Minister’s visit to Paris.
Rafale aircraft
Rafale Jets are different from regular sea fighters. The Rafale Marine fighters are actually the naval variant of the Rafale Fighter Jets. Rafales are manufactured by France Dassault Aviation. They contain twin engines and the latest weapons systems. They also contain Meteor-beyond visual range air-to-air missiles. These are equipped with advanced sensors and radars to track targets. Additionally, the aircraft are capable of carrying exceptionally high payloads.
Not to be missed is that the planes feature some India-specific improvements and can carry out a wide range of missions. The marine version of the planes, however, will be different in some ways. They will operate from aircraft carriers at sea.
There are many differences between the two, including a longer fuselage for landing on aircraft carriers, folding wings, a hook on the tail to arrest landing on a carrier, and more. According to the French company Safran, the main landing gear and nose of the naval version of the plane have been reinforced to cope with the difficult landing of aircraft carriers.
The nose gear of the Rafale M carries “jump strut technology” in the shock absorber to provide the aircraft with an angle of attack at the time of catapult.
