What is Holy Monday?
Holy Week, the week before Easter begins on Holy Monday, also known as Great and Holy Monday. That day Jesus Christ left on foot from Bethany to Jerusalem. The gospels state that on that day Jesus Christ cursed the fig tree, cleansed the temple, and responded to those who questioned his authority.
The roots of Holy Monday go back to the beginning of Lent. Saint Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, and Saint Epiphanius of Constance first coined the phrase “Holy Week” in the 4th century, thus establishing the holiday. While in the 3rd century only Good Friday and Holy Saturday were honored as holy days.
