Harry Potter Wizards Unite Dragons – release date and Dragon region locations explained

The dragons will fly into Harry Potter Wizards Unite on September 7.

Announced alongside news of the first-ever Harry Potter Wizards Unite Fan Festival in Indianapolis, Dragons will be the first new Oddity to appear since the game’s launch.

Dragons have played important roles in the Harry Potter series, from those guarding the Gringotts vaults to Norbert, Hagrid’s pet dragon, so it’s very exciting to see their inclusion in Wizards Unite.

How will dragons be released in Harry Potter Wizards Unite?

The dragons will make their first appearance at the first-ever Harry Potter Wizards Unite Fan Festival at Water River State Park in Indianapolis. The event will take place over two days, August 31 and September 1, and will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ET).

However, the event is not just assigned to Indianapolis. Wizards Unite follows the Pokémon Go formula of having global challenges alongside each Go Fest. So even if you can’t make it to the Fan Festival, keep an eye out for one or two special tasks that will allow you to unlock a special reward.

Dragons will be released worldwide on September 7 after the event ends.

How will dragons work in Harry Potter Wizards Unite?

Dragons will be the first new Oddity category added to Wizard Unite since the game’s launch.

Dragons will have their own page in the Registry, along with the other rarities. Finding a dragon will also work the same way: a special Dragon trail will appear on the map, you will save the dragon from a Confoundable, and then add the dragon to your Registry.

Dragons, however, will be the game’s first regional exclusive Oddity.

Being “regionally exclusive” is exactly what it sounds like. Just like certain Pokémon in Pokémon Go can only be found in specific countries or areas around the world, Tauros only appear in North America, for example, Dragons in Wizards Unite will be assigned specific regions around the world to appear.

Four dragon races have currently been confirmed for Wizards Unite:

  • common welsh green
  • Antipodean Opaleye
  • Peruvian viper tooth
  • chinese fireball

More dragons, like the Hungarian Horntail and Swedish Shortnose, could come to Wizards Unite one day.

A Chinese Fireball, a Common Welsh Green and a Hungarian Horntail.

Before you begin your magical adventure, you’ll want to join a Hogwarts House in Harry Potter Wizards Unite. After that, you’ll need to learn how to fight so you can compete in magical challenges in fortresses or how to use greenhouses so you can perform potion master notes. You can also unlock Portmanteaus Portkeys and choose a profession between Auror, Magizoologist or Professor. Don’t forget to participate in the monthly Community Day event either!

In which regions will dragons appear in Wizards Unite?

These are the dragon races you can find in Wizards Unite and their assigned regions:

  • Common Welsh Green: Europe and Africa
  • Antipodes Opaleye – Oceania, including Australasia and New Zealand
  • Peruvian vipertooth – America and Greenland
  • Chinese Fireball: Asia, Middle East and India

While we haven’t heard any rumors yet, hopefully both the Norwegian Ridgeback and the Hungarian Horntail will find their way into Wizards Unite, as these two breeds played important roles in the Harry Potter series.

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Hagrid, the Hogwarts groundskeeper, attempts to secretly raise a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon, which he names Norbert.

Elsewhere, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry must retrieve a magical egg from the nest of a Hungarian Horntail as part of the Triwizard Tournament, also known as the worst school sporting event of all time.
