Happy Pongal 2023: Pongal is a popular harvest festival celebrated for four days. This year it will be celebrated from January 15 to 18. The festival corresponds with Makar Sankranti and marks the beginning of Uttarayan, the journey of the Sun towards the north and the end of the winter season.
What is Pongal festival called?
The Pongal festival is named after a traditional sweet dish Pongal (“boiling”) which is made from rice boiled in milk with jaggery. It is first offered to gods and goddesses and then enjoyed with the family. According to various texts and inscriptions, the origin of the Pongal dish dates back to the Chola period.
What is the significance of Pongal festival?
The festival is believed to welcome new beginnings. It marks the end of a six-month night. According to mythology, Pongal begins on the day of the Gods. It is also believed that worshiping the Sun God and receiving blessings from him results in good harvests, bringing prosperity and happiness to people’s lives.
