Fortnite sharks are one of the many new additions to Season 3.
Officially known as Loot Sharks, they are creatures with many purposes. Part source of loot, part vehicle, and part threat, they are difficult to find and pin down.
As you might expect, they are challenged, so learning the best way to find and catch them will be helpful.
Please note that this particular challenge can no longer be completed. What’s new? Chapter 4 Season 2 has arrived! New additions include Grind Rails and Kinetic Blades, along with the new Battle Pass, character collection, and Eren Jaeger skin. It’s a good idea to know how to get XP quickly in Fortnite.

Where to find loot sharks in Fortnite
Sharks, perhaps unsurprisingly, appear within Fortnite’s aquatic areas, but they’re harder to find than you might think. Since the Season 3 map mostly comprises water, you’d expect them to be everywhere, but sharks seem to be rare spawns.
Luckily, you’ll know it when you see one, with a telltale fin sticking out of the water. This should not be confused with the splashing of fish or the new addition of eddies, especially since sharks move at high speed.
If you’re struggling, try to stay in some of the more island-like places (La Fortilla, for example), where, anecdotally, we found more. We also found more in the “standard” Battle Royale modes compared to Team Rumble, although that could have been luck on our part.
Alternatively, non-player characters on the map, such as minions, will shoot sharks on sight. This is useful as you will see the shark’s health bar from a distance, which will save you some trouble finding it and help you reduce its health at the same time.
How to defeat a loot shark in Fortnite
Loot Sharks can be defeated for loot, but take a lot of damage before giving up their loot. You’ll need plenty of ammo and a good vantage point without any other players getting in your way.
Not only should you stay out of the water, but even on land you should be aware of their position. Sharks will regularly jump out of the sea at you, thrash around on the shore or dock and harm you, before returning to the water once again.
Before…
A frontal attack can significantly reduce your health, so you’ll always want to keep an eye on where they are.
…and then. A health reduction of 50 points. Oh!
They can also destroy some buildings, so you won’t even be safe inside.
Once defeated, they will leave loot behind. This can include some of the rarer weapon types in the game.
If you need new weapons or ammo mid-fight, the good news is that they’re pretty unforgiving, so you won’t lose them easily.

How to ride sharks in Fortnite
Once you have found a shark, you can ride it using a fishing rod.
You’ll find Fishing Rods as a rare drop in chests and also in barrels at the end of some docks on the edges of locations.
Once you have one, cast a line to the Shark.
You should grab it soon and once done, you’ll ride it like a jet ski.
You have full control of a shark when you drive it, allowing you to boost, jump, and move in any direction you want. You can even aim and fire your gun by getting close.
There are much easier vehicles to find in Fortnite, so consider this an interesting Easter egg rather than a recommended strategy. That said, it can be useful for some types of challenges…

Where to find loot sharks in a location, like Sweaty Sand Sharks, in Fortnite
If you’re really struggling to find a shark in a particular location for a challenge, like Week 1’s ‘Damage Loot Sharks at Sweaty Sands’, then the good news is that you technically don’t have to find the shark. in that place for a start.
With the ability to ride a shark, you can move it to another location on the map.
For example, we found two sharks inside The Fortilla during a match and had time to ride one north to Sweaty Sands, release it, and shoot it for the challenge.
This won’t be possible everywhere due to the map layout and where the circle will end, but if you’re having difficulty completing this (or other Shark-related challenges) then it might be worth ignoring the intended location, doing other things, and if If you manage to find a Shark in your travels and have time to ride it, you should know that you can complete it that way.
