Buying a random item from a malfunctioning vending machine is one of the seasonal quests in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1.
The challenge has you visit the numerous vending machine locations on the new Fortnite map to see if you can find the one that isn’t working properly.
Completing this mission will reward you with 25k XP which will help you unlock more rewards and skins from this season’s Battle Pass.
Please note that this particular challenge can no longer be completed. What’s new? Chapter 4 Season 2 has arrived! New additions include Grind Rails and Kinetic Blades, along with the new Battle Pass, character collection, and Eren Jaeger skin. It’s a good idea to know how to get XP quickly in Fortnite.

Malfunctioning vending machines in Fortnite explained
Malfunctioning vending machines in Fortnite, unlike working units, have a red screen that displays an exclamation point (!). The icon that appears on the screen when you are near a malfunctioning vending machine will also have an exclamation point.
These machines will sell you a random item for 100 gold bars, so you will get something quite useful or a weapon that could help you win the game.
You might even get a mythical weapon…
The problem with trying to find a malfunctioning vending machine is that its location is selected randomly each match. This means that even if you check a good number of vending machine locations, you may not find any that are malfunctioning.
If you want to solve this challenge, we recommend visiting Sleepy Sound and Coney Crossroads at the beginning of a match. Both locations not only contain three vending machines, but they are also located very close together.

This means you can easily check both locations for a malfunctioning vending machine, pick up some nice loot as you go, and then get back into the game.
Just remember: this might take some time.
