Explanation of the fish collection in Fortnite
Fishing is an activity that has been present in Fortnite for quite some time. Each new season brings new fish to catch in Battle Royale, and each of them provides useful help rather than just being a mini-game novelty.
Of course, fishing isn’t exactly the first activity that comes to mind after getting off the bus. But in addition to being useful, there is a very attractive incentive: the Fish Collection.
Unlike Fortnite’s Character Collection, where each NPC has a specific location (which can vary by week), the fish are on the random side of things. You can only know where they usually are by proximity (anywhere, swampy areas, forest areas, etc.), which makes the search a little difficult.
You’ll likely spend time catching the same fish you’ve already unlocked over and over again. But the good news is that doing so usually provides clues to the location of other fish.
If you’re a completionist at heart or just looking for a new task after completing all of the week’s legendary or epic quests, this might scratch your itch.

It is worth noting that even if you meet the area and condition requirements while fishing, some fish have a low chance of showing up. Don’t get too stressed if it doesn’t appear right away, as it’s part of the RNG.
Additionally, Floppers can also be found outside of fishing spots. So if you’re walking or swimming looking for the next spot, throw your rod in the water to kill time. Among weapons and other items, you will find Floppers from time to time.
Best Fish Collecting Locations for Fishing in Fortnite
You can find fishing spots pretty much anywhere in Fortnite: rivers, lakes, oceans, you name it. But that doesn’t mean there will be a fishing rod nearby, or enough distance from the heat of battle to engage in the activity without being knocked down by other players.
The ideal is to look for small cabins near the water, as these usually have barrels with fishing rods. Rods can be quite elusive outside of these, and while you may find them during your regular travels around the map, it’s best to optimize your time as much as possible.
We have compiled a list of the best fishing spots that you can find on the map and you can see them at a glance below:
While several of the fish in the collection can be found anywhere, some request specific areas. The following points should cover them all:
- Coastal areas: Believer Beach is the ideal location, but any coastline will do, such as those around Craggy Cliffs, Steamy Stacks and Dirty Docks, for example. For more secluded spots, head to the ones west of Believer Beach and Holly Hedges, around the edges of the map.
- Forest Areas: This one is pretty easy, as you need to catch these fish in the places surrounding Weeping Woods. Anywhere on the other side of the river will count.
- Mountainous Areas: The river surrounding Catty Corner and Misty Meadows, as well as the places below Catty Corner near the edges of the map are good shouts. Additionally, the area west of Lazy Lake also counts towards this category, but is usually inundated with enemies, so proceed with caution.
- Swampy Areas: Lastly, Slurpy Swamp is the ideal choice for these, but as a general rule, as long as the water is brown, it will count as a swamp, so you don’t need to be exactly next to the factory, which is usually a Popular place for other players.

How to get a professional fishing rod in Fortnite explained
While you can get most fish with the default version, some will require you to use a professional fishing rod.
This is a blue color variant that allows you to catch those specific fish and as you may have already guessed, they can be rare to find.
There’s no specific place to look for them, as they can appear on the ground as normal loot or inside fishing rod barrels, although don’t expect them to be present in many.
Fortunately, you can use weapon workbenches to upgrade a normal rod to this rarity, using gold ingots. If there is one close to your chosen fishing spot, we recommend taking a quick trip and upgrading to make the most of your time. Just know that the cost can be a little high (300 gold bars in our experience).
Fish Collection Badge Reward Explanation
Completing the fish collection in Fortnite comes with a reward, but don’t expect it to be experience, battle stars, or anything in between.
Instead, you’ll get the Large Scale Invasion badge (which is an achievement) in your Legacy catalog. This can be seen from the Careers tab in the main game hub.
While this is a purely completionist goal, it’s worth remembering that fish can be very useful during matches, so always try to stop and enjoy the scenery while you wait for your rod to hook one.
