2026 FIFA World Cup format
The tournament format has been significantly expanded, with capacity for 48 teams compared to the previous 32. With the teams divided into 12 groups made up of four nations, the battle for supremacy promises to be more exciting than ever.
Eight third-place teams from each group, as well as the two best teams from each group, will advance to the round of 32. A total of eight games will be played from the group stage to the final, instead of seven.
FIFA World Cup 2026 dates
An estimated audience of more than 3.5 billion people is expected to be captivated by the tournament’s impressive matches, fostering a sense of unity and shared excitement across continents. It is not clear what date the tournament will begin, but like previous tournaments, it will begin in the month of June and the finals will be played on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Teams
This extraordinary event represents a golden opportunity for the best football teams in the world to compete for the ultimate prize, igniting hopes and dreams. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will move away from its traditional format of 32 teams playing in the tournament. In the next edition, a total of 42 teams will compete for the coveted trophy, 16 more than in the last seven editions.
The division of places by continental confederations has already been defined:
AFC (Asia): Eight direct places + one inter-confederation playoff place.
CAF (Africa): Nine direct places + one inter-confederation playoff place.
Concacaf (North America, Central America, plus the Caribbean): Six direct places + two inter-confederation playoff places.
CONMEBOL (South America): Six direct places + one interconfederation playoff place.
OFC (Oceania): one direct place + one inter-confederation play-off place UEFA (Europe): 16 direct places.
The three host countries will automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thus occupying three of the Concacaf places.
