How to play with friends in Elden Ring is a bit of a mystery at first, as the game features multiplayer mechanics similar to the Soulsborne games.
If you’re not familiar with these mechanics above, instead of creating a lobby or simply sending a direct invite to a friend to join you through your platform’s chat menu, it requires the use of in-game items.
Each item has a unique purpose: some will allow you to see places to summon people, while others are related to invasions, in which random players can appear in your game and attack you.

How summoning works in Elden Ring explained
The online component of Elden Ring is a bit complicated. If you’ve played any Soulsborne games before, you might already know what to expect: while there’s a greater focus on multiplayer, it’s still a bit enigmatic.
There are several items to use and you can easily access them from the pause menu – multiplayer.
The main list of Elden Ring summon items can be found below:
- Furlcalling Finger Remedy: This allows you to see summoning signs in the world; You can then interact with said summoning signal and invite a player, either to join forces or fight against you.
- Finger Severer: Used to remove a summoned player from your session.
- Tarnished’s Coiled Finger: Leave a golden summon sign to play in cooperative multiplayer; Other players will be able to invite you to their session by interacting with this sign on their end.
- Duelist’s Curled Finger: Functions like Tarnished’s Curled Finger, but is intended for competitive multiplayer: Leaves a red summon sign.
- Bloody Finger: Used to invade another player’s session.
- Blue Cipher Ring: Puts you in a standby state: if another player calls for help, you will be summoned as a hunter to help during invasions.
- White Cipher Ring: Does the opposite of the blue cipher ring, allowing you to send a request so that available players can help you during invasions.
It seems complicated, but honestly, you’ll only have to worry about a couple of them if you’re only interested in regular multiplayer. One thing to keep in mind during summons is that there is always a certain purpose for your visits and once that is fulfilled, you will return to play. You’re free to come back later, but that means using another item.
During normal co-op, the multiplayer session will end if you die in battle or defeat the boss in that area. During invasions and competitive play, as you would expect, it’s a defeat or be defeated type scenario.

How to play with friends in Elden Ring
If you want to play with friends in Elden Ring, you need to consider some steps. But there is a simple method to optimize the experience.
First of all, there are two options that you should consider. In the options menu, go to system – network and use the Show player names option. By default, you will only see other enemies as their character class names. But it is better to opt for online identification to know exactly who you are joining or summoning.
Second, in the multiplayer menu, you’ll see two password options at the bottom: enter a multiplayer password and share it with the people you want to play with. This will narrow the search and make it more fluid.
With these two steps taken care of, choose a designated area. You’ll need to create a summon sign, so choosing a location close to your friend is key. We recommend a Site of Grace, as they are easily accessible with a quick trip on the map. Once you’ve found it, use Tarnishe’s Curled Finger to create a Summoning Sign.
That’s all from you. Now, your friend has to be in that same place and use your summon signal. After they have entered the password, you will be transported to their game in a matter of seconds.
