History of Dhanteras 2022

Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashvini of the Hindu calendar. Dhanvantari, who is also worshiped on the occasion of Dhanteras in India, is considered the God of Ayurveda who imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of humanity.

According to ancient legend, Dhanteras is related to the story of a 16-year-old son of King Hima whose horoscope had predicted his death due to a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. That day, his newly married wife did not allow him to sleep and she placed all his ornaments and many gold and silver coins at the entrance to the bedroom.

She told stories and sang songs all night to keep her husband awake. The next day, when Yama, the God of Death, arrived at the Prince’s door, her eyes were dazzled by the brilliance of the jewels and lights. Yama could not enter the Chamber and she preferred to climb to the top of the gold coins and sit there all night listening to the stories and songs. She left quietly the next morning.

The young prince was saved from the clutches of death thanks to his new wife and the day came when it was celebrated as Dhanteras.
