Destiny Nova Mortis and Abbadon: How to get the Void and Solar Thunderlord Exotic quests

How to get two new exotic machine guns thanks to The Dawning.

Nova Mortis and Abbadon are the latest two Exotics to be introduced to Destiny thanks to The Dawning seasonal event, which offers Void and Solar counterparts to the Arc Thunderlord Exotic we’re already familiar with.

As with other featured exotic weapons, there is a quest involved that requires specific steps to unlock. Fortunately, once you have one, the other line of quests follows suit, so you’ll receive them one after another.

If you’re interested in other activities in The Dawning, you can unlock the Year 3 Icebreaker, find the hidden sparrow Lysander’s Cry, and complete milestones in the Competitive Spirit book.

Destiny Nova Mortis: How to get the Void Thunderlord exotic quest

To unlock the Nova Mortis exotic questline, you must receive the Xur tag as part of The Dawning. You will unlock this as the seventh reward in the Competitive Spirit book by completing milestones related to SRL 2016 and Vanguard Elite Strike scoring. The link above explains the numerous objectives and the best way to complete them, but in summary, you should get a lot just by playing both events in the coming weeks.

Once you have Xur’s tag, head to the pile of gifts in the Tower behind the reward board and open the large gift in the center, which will give you a Tattered Scheme and the ‘Songs of the Void’ questline.

Requires the following steps:

  • Talk to Ikora Ray, then Banshee-44.
  • Get 100 kills with Void abilities in any activity.
  • Talk to Banshee-44
  • Complete the “Abomination Heist” attack.
  • Talk to Ikora Ray and receive the Nova Mortis.

Destiny Abbadon: How to get the Solar Thunderlord exotic quest

Once you’ve unlocked Nova Mortis, Commander Zavala will give you the Hymns of Fire quest to help you unlock Abbadon.

Note that some users report that you may not have the quest prompt above your head once you finish the last quest, but still visit it and you should set it up with the following steps:

  • Talk to Banshee-44
  • Get 100 kills with solar abilities in any activity.
  • Talk to Banshee-44
  • Complete the ‘Shield Brothers’ attack
  • Talk to Command Zavala and receive Abbadon.

Then you’ll have the Void and Solar Thunderlord variants ready to go! Thanks to DasK18 on the Destiny sub-Reddit for filling in the gaps for the two questlines above.

What else you should know about Nova Mortis and Abbadon in Destiny

  • Since Xur’s tag is required to open a Dawning gift, it is unknown if these quests will still be available after the event ends. However, since the Competitive Spirit book is still available after the event ends, it may simply unlock once you get the reward. We’ll wait and see!
  • Like Icebreaker, both Exotics drop to 370 Light.
  • The Nova Mortis propaganda reads: “From the space between I come. Fragments of stars burn in my footsteps. In my hands I wait for Death.” – Nova Mortis Song
  • The propaganda about Abbadon says: “I am one with the flame. The conflagration is reborn. I am your funeral pyre.” – Abbadon Hymn
  • According to Bungie’s official forums, none of the quests count towards the ‘An Exotic Life’ Book of Records milestone.
