Destiny 2 Masterwork Core sources and Catalysts list

Destiny 2 Masterworks are rarer and more powerful versions of weapons and armor.

Masterworks allows you to upgrade legendary weapons or armor by offering stat boosts, the ability to drop super orbs, and kill trackers, giving you something to aim for as you continue playing in the endgame.

Not only are they available for legendary weapons and armor, but also with the introduction of Warmind DLC Exotics, in the form of Masterwork Catalysts. These are unlocked differently and many require a large dose of luck.

Last updated (October 17): Festival of the Lost has introduced Fighting Lion Catalyst, with a weekly reward that helps complete it faster.

How to get masterwork cores

Masterwork Cores are a resource that you can spend on upgrading your favorite legendary weapons or armor to Masterwork versions.

There are several ways to obtain Masterwork Cores in Forsaken. Confirmed methods include:

  • Purchased from Spider in the Tangled Shore (10 Legendary Shards, price doubles for each same-day purchase)
  • Decommissioning Master Weapons or Armor
  • Reach the weekly milestone when your clan is at rank 6
  • Complete Masterwork Objectives on Solstice of Heroes Armor Pieces

How to upgrade Masterworks in Destiny 2

Before Forsaken, Masterwork upgrades were binary (weapons were either Masterworks or not), but now they are boosted by ten levels. Each level will cost resources (Glimmer, Legendary Shards, and Masterwork Cores), allowing you to invest as much or as little as you want.

Here’s what you get for Masterworking weapons and when:

  • Level 7: Kill Tracker (You can now choose to display Vanguard or Crucible kills yourself for free at any time)
  • Level 10: stat boost; generates Super Orbs on multiple kills (weapons), -3% reduced damage when using Supers (armor)

You will be able to tell if a weapon has been fully Masterworked thanks to the gold border it has in your inventory.

While these aren’t huge advantages over existing weapons, there are some useful benefits, such as additional orbs that are useful for getting Supers faster during team-focused activities such as raids, raids, and Crucible matches.

It now seems much more expensive to completely manufacture a weapon, with Reddit’s Aussiehalo says it will cost 10,000 Glimmer, 27 Legendary Shards, and 17 Masterwork Cores. As a result, Masterwork Cores may be easier to obtain in Forsaken, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Destiny 2 Masterpiece Catalysts Explained

Like Legendary Masterpieces, it is possible to obtain Exotic Masterpieces. You have to earn catalysts to upgrade these weapons, giving them additional perks, the ability to drop multiple orbs with multiple kills and follow-up kills.

How to get masterwork catalysts

Exotic weapon catalysts will appear randomly, but only under certain requirements. If you research an exotic weapon, you will notice that it has a Masterwork Catalyst slot. Hovering over them gives you a hint on how to unlock it:

  • Kill any enemy: Borealis, Crimson, DARCI, Tractor Cannon, Worldline Zero
  • Kill any enemy on Nessus: Sturm
  • Heroic Adventure Endings: The Huckleberry
  • Crucible Victories: Jade Rabbit, Vigilance Wing
  • Kill the bosses in Nightfall/Heroic Strike: Merciless
  • Leviathan Raid Section Completions: Skyburner Oath
  • Prestige Leviathan Raid Section Completions: Legend of Acrius
  • Prestige Eater of Worlds Section Endings: Telesto
  • Prestige Spire of Stars: Sleeper Simulant Section Completions
  • Faction Reunion Reward: Graviton Lance, Sweet Business, and Sunshot
  • Nascent Dawn Quest Reward: Polaris Lance
  • The Whisper in the Heroic Quest Reward: The Worm’s Whisper
  • Solstice of Heroes Event: Get the Solstice armor for a limited time and upgrade it to Legendary before the arrival of Year 2
  • Festival of the Lost 2018 Release: Fighting Lion

Thanks to ebolaxb on Reddit for filling in the gaps with the list above.

Masterwork Catalysts are literal drops: they are golden pyramids that you collect. When you do, they won’t appear in your inventory, but they will appear every time you research that exotic weapon. Here’s the falling Tractor Cannon, for example:

You should also note that you must possess the exotic for the catalyst to drop, but it is not necessary to have it equipped or in your guardian for it to appear. Whether you need it in your Vault is another question, so it might be worth having it there just to be safe.

Explanation of how to use catalysts and their main advantages

Once a catalyst has dropped, investigate the weapon, hover over the slot, and apply it. This gives you one of the upgrades – the ability to drop multiple orbs with multiple kills – but the other perks are missing.

The Catalyst must be fully activated by performing further actions to unlock the additional benefit:

exotic weapon Catalyst finishing method Masterpiece Perk
Boreal 150 kills by arc, solar energy and vacuum 20 reload speed
crimson 300 precision kills 20 rank
DARCI 300 precision kills 20 Stability

Thanks to ebolaxb on Reddit once again, as well as brndnvn on the Worldline Zero completion method for help with the above.

How Masterworks worked in Destiny 2 Year 1

Previously, Masterworks were random drops once you reached a certain power level. They can come from anywhere you get legendary weapons or armor in the game, whether they are dropped during an activity, from chests, or from engrams.

There is also a “very high chance” of receiving Masterwork loot from the following:

Note: All raid masterworks are obtained through raid drops, not engrams or vendors.

So while playing the activities above will give you better chances, the more you play, the better your chances of getting Masterpieces.

Then, the more Masterworks you receive, the more you can dismantle for Masterworks Cores and spend them on upgrading the legendary weapons you use the most.
