Dead Space weapon locations, best weapons, and where to find every gun

Dead Space’s weapons are mostly repurposed mining tools that Isaac uses to destroy Necromorphs in both the remake and the original.

However, unlike the original, you must find the location of each weapon in Dead Space before you can use it, instead of purchasing some from Ishimura’s shop.

As each weapon is best suited to take on a specific type of Necromorph, we’ve also detailed the best weapons in Dead Space to help you decide which weapons to keep in Isaac’s inventory.

In this page:

Dead Space weapons explained

There are seven weapons in the Dead Space remake:

  • plasma cutter
  • pulse rifle
  • Ripper
  • Flamethrower
  • contact beam
  • line gun
  • force weapon

You can obtain each weapon in the same order mentioned above, but some can be easily missed, such as the Line Gun.

Unlike the original, you can only get new weapons by finding them in different areas of Ishimura, not by purchasing them in the store. However, you can buy ammo and weapon upgrades from the store, as long as you have first found their schematics somewhere on the ship.

Weapon upgrades add more possible node options to a weapon’s skill tree, where you can then spend nodes to improve attributes such as damage, capacity, reload speed, and special upgrades unique to each weapon.

Each weapon has a primary firing mode and a secondary firing mode. On controllers, you use a weapon’s primary fire mode by pressing R2/RT and its secondary fire mode by pressing R1/RB. Each weapon’s primary and secondary fire has a different effect, but in general, the secondary fire requires more ammo than the primary fire.

It’s important to note that you only pick up ammo for the weapons in Isaac’s inventory. So if you really don’t like a weapon, be sure to keep it in Ishimura’s shop. On the other hand, if you’re out of ammo for one of your favorite weapons, make sure you don’t save it!

Remember, unless you’re using a weapon like the Flamethrower, your goal should be to target a Necromorph’s limbs, not its head or body. You kill enemies much faster this way. However, bosses like Hunter and Leviathan have their own unique strategies for defeating them.

The best weapons in Dead Space

There are situations where certain weapons are more useful than others, as no weapon is capable of perfectly dealing with all Necromorph types. Although it mostly comes down to personal preference, there are some weapons that we recommend upgrading over others as they are versatile or have cheap ammo costs.

With that in mind, we consider the Pulse Rifle, Plasma Cutter, and Force Pistol to be the best weapons in Dead Space.

You should use the pulse rifle on these types of enemies.

When upgraded, the pulse rifle offers some of the highest damage numbers in the entire game, but it’s not the best for shooting an enemy’s limbs. It’s a secondary fire, however, it places a mine that explodes on impact with a Necromorph, and this usually rips their legs off. You can then switch to another weapon to finish it off or unload some of the pulse rifle’s main fire ammo.

The pulse rifle also has a huge magazine size when upgraded, meaning you’ll be able to use it more often than other weapons if your inventory is limited.

The trusty plasma cutter is ideal for dismembering necromorphs.

Although the Line Gun is basically a better version of the Plasma Cutter, its ammo is much more expensive to purchase and has a smaller magazine size. You have to be more precise with the plasma cutter, but if your resources are limited and your aim is decent, we always recommend upgrading to the plasma cutter instead of the linear gun.

The Force Gun is good for close encounters.

Lastly, we consider the Force Gun to be one of the best weapons in the game for its incredible crowd control abilities. If you ever see a Necromorph, or a mob of enemies, approaching Isaac, pulling out the Force Gun and firing can buy you more time and cut off some limbs, depending on how much he’s upgraded.

We can help guide you through Ishimura with our weapon and suit locations, marker fragment locations for the secret ending, secret break room codes, security clearance levels, master override, the scientific methods side quest, and the location of Peng treasure. We also have solutions for the communications satellites and Centrifuge puzzles, a list of trophies and achievements, and strategies on how to beat the Hunter, Leviathan, and Leviathan Remnant bosses.

Where to find the plasma cutter weapon in Dead Space

The Plasma Cutter is a must-see weapon location in Dead Space. You’ll pick it up right at the beginning of the game in Chapter 1, after you get separated from your crew and have fled from the Necromorph.

The plasma cutter is a precision weapon that you will use for most of the game to cut off enemies’ limbs. You can use its secondary firing mode to change the reticle to a horizontal or vertical line, making it easier to shoot certain limbs.

A stack of six plasma cutter ammo costs 1,200 credits in the store.

Where to find the Pulse Rifle weapon in Dead Space

The pulse rifle in Dead Space is located in the medical tram station next to a corpse, and you will first encounter it in Chapter 2 on your way to obtaining the captain’s equipment and your first level of clearance.

The pulse rifle has a high rate of fire and is best used when trying to shoot something at an enemy. Any Necromorph with a glowing sac or explosive body part is best dealt with with the pulse rifle. However, it is not very good at severing limbs, so in this situation it is recommended to use its secondary fire to launch a proximity mine.

If you ever want to retrieve a mine and return your ammo, aim it and then press R1/RB.

A stack of 25 pulse rifle ammo costs 1,250 credits in the store.

Where to find the Ripper weapon in Dead Space

The Ripper in Dead Space is found in the Engineering Machine Shop during Chapter 3, beneath a headless corpse. The first time you come across this area is when you do the “Refuel Engines (South)” objective.

Holding down the Ripper’s main fire button turns it into a short-range saw that you can use to sever an enemy’s limbs. However, they will still attack when you do this, so it is best to do this behind them or when they are in stasis.

The Ripper’s secondary fire fires a single sword that can bounce off surfaces to damage multiple enemies in a room or even wound the same enemy again. This is best used in smaller rooms.

A stack of three Ripper ammo costs 1,500 credits in the store.

Where to find the flamethrower weapon in Dead Space

The flamethrower in Dead Space is located just before the thick tunnel to the fuel storage in Engineering during Chapter 3. You will first encounter it after activating the centrifuge on your way to manually start the engines.

The flamethrower is great for dealing with the small crawling enemies that appear after certain Necromorphs burst open or when they deal damage to a group of limbless enemies. Its secondary fire launches a projectile that creates a high wall of flames upon impact.

A stack of 25 flamethrower ammo costs 1750 credits in the store.

Where to find the Contact Beam weapon in Dead Space

The contact beam in Dead Space is located in the Records Office in Administration during Chapter 4. You must use your Level 2 security clearance to open the office door. You first encounter it after emerging from a void while on your way to siphon off the Mining Administration’s energy.

The contact beam fires a continuous line of energy that is excellent for severing limbs or bursting open certain types of necromorphs. It’s faster than using the plasma cutter or line gun, but you use up a lot of ammo when you unleash it.

The Contact Beam’s secondary fire mode charges a single, powerful laser shot when held down. It’s great for shooting bosses like Leviathan.

A stack of 5 Contact Beam ammo costs 2000 credits in the store.

Where to find the Line Gun weapon in Dead Space

The Line Gun in Dead Space is found in the Emergency Equipment Storage Room in Medical during Chapter 5. You must use your Level 2 Security Clearance to open the door. You first encounter it while running away from the Hunter, but you may want to come back later and get it, since the Hunter is an unkillable enemy at this point.

Line Gun is basically an upgraded version of the Plasma Cutter. It has a larger line which means you can shoot both legs of a Necromorph at once. Its secondary fire mode fires a laser mine that is good for amputating limbs if placed correctly. Like the pulse rifle, these mines can be returned to recover ammo by aiming them and pressing R1/RB.

A stack of three Line Gun ammo costs 2,100 credits in the store.

Where to find the Force Gun weapon in Dead Space

The Force Gun in Dead Space is located in West Seedling Room A in Hydroponics during Chapter 6. You first encounter it on your way to inject the first Wheezer after fighting a horde of enemies in the large room with the elevator in the half.

Think of the Force Gun as the “leave me alone” weapon. It has a very short range, but this makes it ideal for pushing enemies away from you if they get uncomfortably close. The Force Gun’s secondary firing mode creates a gravity well that draws enemies towards it.

A stack of three Force Gun ammo costs 2,400 credits in the store.

Have fun destroying those limbs in Dead Space!
