1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is an action-adventure game that was first released in Japan and North America in November 1998, followed by a release in PAL regions the next month. Developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 With 3D graphics, this game marked a significant change from the earlier games in The Legend of Zelda series. The game was developed by Nintendo EAD and led by five directors, including Eiji Aonuma and Yoshiaki Koizumi, while Shigeru Miyamoto, the series co-creator, produced the game, and Kensuke Tanabe was the writer. The musical score was created by veteran Zelda series composer, Koji Kondo. In the game, the player takes on the role of Link, who must travel through time and navigate dungeons and an overworld to stop the evil king Ganondorf and save the fantasy land of Hyrule. Ocarina of Time introduced several new features that have since become commonplace in 3D adventure games, such as a target-lock system and context-sensitive buttons. Additionally, the player must learn to play several songs on an ocarina to progress through the game. One of the unique features of Ocarina of Time is the titular Ocarina, a musical instrument that Link uses to cast spells and manipulate time. The player can play different songs on the Ocarina to accomplish various tasks, such as teleporting to different locations or summoning creatures to aid in battle. The game also introduced the concept of targeting enemies, which has become a staple of the Zelda series. The targeting system allows Link to focus his attacks on specific enemies, making combat more strategic.

2. The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released for the PlayStation 3 in 2013, and a remastered version was later released for the PlayStation 4 in 2014. The game takes place in a world where a fungal infection has turned most of the human population into zombie-like creatures called “infected”. The player takes on the role of Joel, a smuggler who is tasked with escorting a young girl named Ellie across the country in the hopes of finding a cure for the infection. The gameplay of The Last of Us combines elements of third-person shooter and stealth games. The player must scavenge for resources and weapons, and engage in combat with both human enemies and infected creatures. The game also features puzzles and exploration elements. One of the game’s standout features is its storytelling and character development. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is at the heart of the game, and their interactions and conversations throughout their journey add depth and emotion to the game’s world. The Last of Us was praised for its graphics, gameplay, and storytelling, and it won numerous awards, including Game of the Year. It has been followed up by a sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which was released in 2020 and continues the story of Ellie as she navigates a new world filled with danger and conflict.

3. Super Mario Bros

Describing Super Mario World is relatively simple. It’s a classic Super Mario game, complete with mushrooms, perfect running, and jumping action, and a vast world to explore that is packed with secrets. However, what distinguishes Super Mario World from other 2D Mario games is its intricate complexity. Later iterations of the franchise, like the New Super Mario Bros. series, simplified the overworld and got rid of hidden paths and vertical levels in favor of linear tracks and ground-based obstacle courses. They also eliminated flying from the gameplay (capes rule, helicopter hats drool!). Super Mario World represents the pinnacle of technology and game design that began with Super Mario Bros. Its inclusion on this list is a challenge to game developers to create something even better: a game that is challenging but not opaque, tough but not intimidating, visually stunning, humorous, joyful.

4. Tetris

Back in the day, Alexey Pajitnov’s classic Russian tile-matching puzzle game blew my mind. I can still remember spending hours sitting in front of the TV with my NES console at my feet, rotating brightly colored puzzle pieces as they fell from the top, attempting to arrange them into horizontal lines. The goal was to get the lines to assemble correctly and disappear, allowing me to advance to the next stage. It was a crazy amount of fun, even as the blocks began to fall at an increasingly fast pace and I fell into a frenzied panic. Nevertheless, I couldn’t stop playing the game, no matter how many times I had to restart it. There was always the chance that I would get the right puzzle piece at the right time and be able to move on to the next stage. Even now, Tetris remains one of my all-time favorite games. Initially created by software developer Alexey Pajitnov, Tetris was an import from Soviet Russia. Nintendo bought the rights to the game for a period in the late ’80s through the mid-’90s, following an intense rights war. The Tetris Company now owns the rights to this iconic game of vertical blocks, which holds a Guinness World Record for being the most ported game ever. You may have it on your phone right now, as the compulsively playable game has been adapted to a variety of platforms.

What was the first video game?

During the 1940s and 1950s, attempts to develop software programs for entertainment purposes were predictably primitive. In games like chess or Nim, where players had to pick matchsticks until just one was left for the loser to pick up, towering computer systems struggled to compete with human opponents. These systems rarely had any kind of screen, with Nim using flashing lights to indicate moves, highlighting the “video” component of the first video game that was missing. Inventor Thomas T. Goldsmith came close, filing a patent in 1947 for a proposed device that used a cathode ray tube, or CRT, as a display and allowed players to control lines on the screen to “hit” paper airplanes glued on top of the glass by turning knobs. However, Goldsmith’s idea most likely never advanced beyond the patent phase.William Higinbotham had a different goal just over a decade later. As the head of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Instrumentation Division in Upton, New York, the nuclear physicist believed that conventional science fairs were too stagnant. For the annual visitors day, Higinbotham aimed to create something that would engage spectators rather than allowing them to be passive observers. Drawing on his college experience with oscilloscopes, which show changes in electrical voltage, and CRTs, Higinbotham worked for three weeks to assemble a system that employed an analog vacuum tube computer to manipulate curves on a tube. The computer’s instruction manual described how these curves could be used to resemble the trajectories of bullets, missiles, or bouncing balls. Higinbotham was interested in the latter and decided to replicate a physical sport on the screen, calling it Tennis for Two. On October 18, 1958, when visitors arrived at the Lab, they were curious about Tennis for Two. The game featured a side view of a tennis court and a small, blurry dot that was controlled using knobs. Despite its 5-inch display, it was so intriguing that hundreds of people queued up for a chance to play what is widely considered the first video game to be introduced to the general public. The following year, Higinbotham improved the concept by using a larger screen and allowing players to adjust the game’s “gravity” so that the ball could behave as though it were being played on the moon. Although Tennis for Two was popular, it was considered nothing more than a novelty, and the device was dismantled, with its parts being used for other projects. Since Higinbotham was a federal government employee and did not own any of the items he created during work hours, he did not bother to file a patent. The video game industry of the 1980s only recognized Higinbotham’s pioneering work in the field after looking back in time. Although there is still some debate over what constitutes the first video game – since the oscilloscope wasn’t technically a video display – it is apparent that Higinbotham conceptualized an interactive computer program using a screen, and this idea was further refined by Spacewar! in 1961 and every game that followed. Although it took Higinbotham just three weeks to create the first video game, Brookhaven’s future staff needed more time to replicate it. To recreate the game in 1997 and 2008 for its 50th anniversary, a team spent over three months producing a replica system. To experience what early adopters felt in 1958, a replica is on display at the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.
