Baba Amte Death Anniversary 2023: Baba Amte, also known as Murlidhar Devidas Amte, was born on December 26, 1914. He was an Indian social worker and activist primarily recognized for his efforts to empower and rehabilitate leprosy patients.
What is Baba Amte known for?
Baba Amte is considered the last genuine supporter of Gandhian philosophy. Under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the Indian Freedom Movement and participated in almost all the important movements he led. He began representing leaders of the Indian freedom movement who had been detained by the British government in 1942 as part of the Quit India movement.
Baba Amte also spent some time at Sevagram, the ashram founded by Mahatma Gandhi, and adopted Gandhianism as a philosophy. He put Gandhism into practice by wearing a charkha for spinning and wearing Khadi. Gandhi gave Dr. Amte the name Abhay Sadhak after learning that he had protected a girl from the lascivious taunts of some British soldiers (Fearless Seeker of Truth).
Later, his encounter with Tulshiram, a leprosy patient, and a living corpse changed the purpose of his life. Amte sought to promote the idea that society cannot truly help leprosy patients until it is free of the misinformation and “mental leprosy” associated with the disease. She dedicated her life to helping people and lived by the saying “Work builds; charity destroys.”

What movement did Baba Amte start?
Leprosy is a debilitating disease that Baba Amte and his wife Indu Ghuleshastri dedicated their lives to treating and helping those who suffered from it. They embarked on a mission to provide world-class medical care that would end the scourge of disease.
He established three ashrams, Anandvan, Somnath and Ashokvan, for the care and rehabilitation of leprosy patients, people with disabilities and members of underrepresented groups. These Ashrams offered small-scale craft production and vocational training to help patients financially.
Other social causes to which Baba Amte dedicated his life include the Quit India movement, as well as efforts to educate the public about the value of ecological harmony, wildlife preservation and Narmada Bachao Andolan. Amte established Lok Biradari Prakalp in 1973 to help the Madia Gond tribe of Gadchiroli district. And in 1985, he started the first Knit India Peace Mission. At the age of 72, he walked more than 3,000 miles from Kanyakumari to Kashmir to promote national unity. Three years later, he organized a second march that covered more than 1,800 miles from Assam to Gujarat. He also participated in 1990’s Narmada Bachao Andolan, leaving Anandwan and spending seven months there.
Amte died of ailments associated with aging in Anandwan, Maharashtra, on February 9, 2008. In keeping with the values he preached as an environmentalist and social reformer, he decided to be buried first before being cremated. However, his relatives who live in various parts of the country still continue his legacy of helping people.

For his selfless service to humanity, Baba Amte received numerous international honours, including the UN Human Rights Award of 1988, a share of the Templeton Prize of 1990 and the Gandhi Peace Prize of 1999. Awarded the Padma Vibhushan, Dr. Ambedkar International Award, Padma Shri, Gandhi Peace Award, Ramon Magsaysay Award, Templeton Award and Jamnalal Bajaj Award, he is known as the modern Gandhi of India.
