Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Kalydonian Boar strategy and location

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Kalydonian Boar strategy and location

The Kalydonian Boar from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a side quest early in the game as part of the Daughters of Artemis quest line.

Once you have completed the Temple of Artemis quest in the middle of Phokis, which is a fast travel point so worth visiting in itself, you will be asked to hunt the Calydonian Boar.

However, finding and facing a legendary beast is a much more difficult task right out of the box, even if you’re of the same level, so it’s worth taking the time to prepare yourself with a specific strategy first.

13 things you should know when starting Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Kalydonian Boar Location in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Once you have started the quest for one of the Daughters of Artemis, your goal will be to find the boar. They tell you that it is in the north of the Sacred Lands of Apollo, on a swampy plateau.

Specifically, the location that finds us west of the Temple of Artemis; If you haven’t visited it before, it will be a question mark on your map.

If you come from the Temple of Artemis in the east, you will come to a cliff. Climb it up and the Kalydonian Boar should be present right in front of you.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Kalydonian Boar Strategy and How to Prepare

Taking on the Kalydonian Boar itself is a little different to the human enemies you’ve faced, with its lunges and dashes, but the basics of blocking and dodging, then flanking from the side, remain the same, and in Ultimately, I see you prevail.

However, the reason the Kalydonian Boar is so difficult is that it will spawn several smaller Boars to attack you at regular intervals. These will quickly overwhelm you from all angles, and even if you take them all out, the Kalydonian Boar will appear more.

Then, once you’ve eliminated them, the Kalydonian Boar’s health will be partially restored and you’ll repeat the process with no real progress.

The key to winning the battle is to cull the smaller boars for good. The way to do this is to paralyze them.

The easiest way to paralyze enemies is by using paralyzing arrows. This is a skill you unlock in the Hunter skill tree, so have an extra skill point (by leveling up or visiting a tomb) and then unlock it.

Before you go into battle, remember to craft some Stun Arrows from your inventory menu (get as many as you can, as boars can easily go unnoticed), then equip them by pressing Left on the D-Pad while your bow is drawn.

Now shoot them at the boars, and when their health drops to zero, they will not die, but will simply be paralyzed on the field. They look dead, but they are not. Even when everyone is paralyzed, the Kalydonian boar will not appear again over the course of the battle because they are technically still alive.

With this threat removed, you can now fully focus on the Kalydonian Boar without worrying about becoming overwhelmed. It should be noted that you can accidentally kill the boars if you slide a melee weapon near them, so try to move the fight away from their resting places to avoid doing so.

Of course, if you’re still struggling, there are a few other things to keep in mind about the Calydonian boar:

  • There are other skills worth unlocking that can help in battle. There is one that allows you to recover some health instantly, which is particularly useful since you can’t do this easily during battle, and the Kalydonian Boar can deal severe damage to you even if you are at a slightly higher level. Another is the poison ability, which cannot be blocked since the Kalydonian Boar has no shield and can help combat its health recovery.

  • There are weapon engravings that give you increased damage to animals. You unlock this by killing predators; Spend some time exploring the wilderness, completing tombs and killing any snakes you encounter as you go, and completing bounty board quests that point you in the direction of beasts to rack up some kills and unlock these levels.

  • While most side quests seem to scale to your current level, the Kalydonian Boar (and apparently other Daughters of Artemis quests) do not. For us, the quest appeared at level 13 and we completed it much easier at level 16, so if you can come back to the quest later after accumulating some XP, that will certainly help you.
  • Once you’ve defeated the Kalydonian Boar, remember to turn around and kill the paralyzed boars and loot their bodies for materials.

Once the Kalydonian Boar quest is complete, you can return to the Temple of Artemis and get quests for all the remaining legendary beasts.

Their level requirements can be very high and some of their locations are located very far away, so it can take a while to reach them, but having them unlocked means you can destroy them as you complete the story and other activities. Happy hunting!
