Finding materials is an important new part of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Furniture and tools require a number of materials before they can be crafted, and as you’ve probably guessed, you’ll spend a lot of time searching for these special items.
We explain where to find a variety of material types early in the game to help you get the equipment you need as easy as possible.

How materials work in Animal Crossing New Horizons
Materials are components that you want to gather as often as you can. Fortunately, they are usually a byproduct of other activities you may already be doing, whether it’s fishing, shaking trees, or walking the beach.
Of course, each recipe or tool requires specific materials before it can be crafted.
A Simply DIY workbench requires two types of materials.
Additionally, some DIY recipes will require certain furniture. If you want to build a small library, for example, you will need five pieces of wood and three copies of the Book furniture. This means that you must first create or purchase this furniture before you can build the small library.
It is also important to note that the larger the item, the more materials and possibly furniture will be needed to make it.
Fortunately, New Horizons gives you the ability to stack materials in your pockets, so you don’t have to worry too much about inventory organization.
How to get wood, softwood, hardwood and branches in Animal Crossing New Horizons
Materials derived from wood can be found in trees by performing the following actions:
- Branch Location: Found on the ground or shaking trees.
- Hardwood Location: From hitting trees with a flimsy or stone ax
- Softwood Location: From hitting trees with a flimsy or stone axe
- Wood Location: By hitting trees with a flimsy or stone axe.
Remember, if you’re hitting trees, you’ll need a stone or flimsy axe, and they’ll only drop three pieces per tree per day.
Cutting down trees is one way to find materials.
How to get plants like weeds, tulips and lilies in Crossing New Horizons
The plants will grow naturally or require you to plant and care for them before they become the material you need:
- Lilies Location: Plant and grow these flowers, then collect the flowers once they bloom.
- Tulip Location: Plant and grow these flowers, then collect the flowers once they bloom.
- Weed Location: Pull out weeds that grow on the islands
How to get trash like an empty can, boot, or tire in Animal Crossing New Horizons
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, or so they say. In the past, the trash you found at activities was just that: something to recycle or sell. In New Horizons, it’s one of many useful components you need to track down:
- Trunk Location: Caught Fishing
- Empty Can Location: Caught Fishing
- Tire Location: Caught fishing.

- Iron Nugget Location: Hit a rock with an ax or shovel
- Stone Location: Hit a rock with an ax or shovel.
You can hit a rock over and over again, so make sure you do this to get the maximum amount of material!
