Aadhaar is India’s main national identification system. It is a unique 12-digit identity number that serves as proof of residency in India. Biometric and demographic data of individuals are collected by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Aadhaar is essential for all citizens living in the country and comes in handy while applying for a passport, opening a bank account or for other official purposes. Aadhaar is not mandatory, but it is still important to have it.

But what about NRIs or non-resident Indians? Can they also apply for Aadhaar ID? And do they need it? These are some frequently asked questions which we will answer in this article and at the same time explain the entire Aadhaar enrollment process for NRIs. Keep reading to know more.

Can non-resident Indians (NRIs) apply for Aadhaar?

Absolutely. Any Indian citizen, whether living in the country or abroad, is eligible to apply for Aadhaar. And their families can do it too, as long as they are Indian citizens, NRIs or residents, it doesn’t matter. India is one of the few countries that does not allow dual citizenship. Therefore, if you renounce Indian citizenship, you will not be able to enroll in Aadhaar.

Aadhaar for NRI spouse?

NRI spouses are also eligible for Aadhaar if they are residents of India.

In case the spouse is an NRI, his or her valid Indian passport must be presented as proof of identity (PoI).

In case the spouse resides in India, any valid Proof of Relationship (PoR) document is required. The passport of the NRI partner can also be used if it has the name of the spouse.

Aadhaar for NRI children?

For children under 5 years old

For NRI children: A valid Indian passport is required as a point of interest

For non-NRI children: Any valid PoR such as a birth certificate or Aadhaar of the parent/guardian will suffice

For children between 5 and 18 years old

Consent of a parent/guardian is paramount for an NRI dependent minor to apply for Aadhaar.

For NRI children: Indian passport is mandatory as a point of interest.

For non-NRI children: A valid identity card and proof of address (PoA) such as a school ID are required. In case no PoI or PoA is available, any valid PoR document such as a birth certificate will suffice.

What are all the documents you need?

A valid Indian passport is essential to apply for Aadhaar as an NRI. It serves as proof of identification (PoI). Other essential documents include a valid Proof of Address (PoA) and Proof of Relationship (PoR).

Below are some essential documents normally required for Aadhaar enrollment.

  • Birth certificate
  • Address verification
  • School certificate
  • Indian mobile number
  • Valid email ID

Process to apply for Aadhar as an NRI

  1. Visit any nearby Aadhaar Kendra.
  2. Carry your valid Indian passport.
  3. Fill out the registration form and make sure the details match your passport and other documents.
  4. Keep your email ID ready. It is mandatory.
  5. Read and sign the NRI registration statement. It is slightly different for NRIs, so make sure you read it carefully.
  6. Ask the operator to register you as an NRI.
  7. Submit your passport as proof of identity.
  8. You can also choose your passport as proof of address and date of birth or use another valid document.
  9. Complete the biometric capture process (fingerprint and iris scan).
  10. Check all the details on the screen (in English and local language) before allowing the operator to send them.
  11. Pick up your enrollment confirmation/receipt with your 14-digit enrollment ID and date and time stamp.
