How to unlock the M4 in Modern Warfare 2
You don’t need to unlock the M4 in Modern Warfare 2, as it is the first open assault rifle available.
However, you must reach level 4 to access custom loadouts where you can customize every aspect of your class.
The M4 is the first weapon in the assault rifle progression tree, and as you level up you’ll unlock a few others along the way, like the M16.
Best Modern Warfare 2 M4 equipment and accessories
Our picks for the best Modern Warfare 2 M4 loadout and accessories are:
- Optic: Cronen Mini Red Dot (unlocks at FSS Hurricane Lv. 2) or Forge Tac Delta 4 (unlocks at 556 Icarus Lv. 9)
- Stock: Corio Factory Price (unlocks at M4 Lv. 7)
- Rear Grip: Ghost Grip (unlocked at FSS Hurricane Lv. 12)
- Muzzle: Forge-Tac Castle Comp (unlocks at 556 Icarus Lv. 10)
- Barrel: 20″ Hightower Barrel (unlocks at M4 Lv. 15)
It’s worth noting that if you own the Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 2, you’ll have access to the full set of M4 platform accessories, including those mentioned above, right away without needing to level any weapons.
By using these accessories, you will be prepared for most situations while still having a consistent weapon in your hands. The Cronen Mini Red Dot is a good option to increase the accuracy of the weapon.
Alternatively, if you want to lean more towards longer range encounters, the Forge Tac Delta 4 is a good alternative with its 4x zoom functionality.
By choosing the Corio Precio Factory for the original M4 slot, you get aiming stability and recoil control, making shooting distant opponents an easier task.
With Phantom Grip, you will increase your aim down speed and Sprint to Fire speed. On the other hand, Forge-Tac Castle Comp helps with recoil control by keeping the gun stable.
The 20″ Tempus Hightower barrel adds a lot to the M4, making it fire faster while improving its hipfire accuracy and damage range.
If you want to experiment further, note that attachments are unlocked by using other weapons in Modern Warfare 2; For example, the Corio RE-X Pro scope is unlocked on all supported weapons by unlocking the .50 GS pistol at level 13, then leveling it to level 4.
As such, it’s worth trying out various weapons to unlock as many attachments as possible and then modify them as you see fit.
Additionally, once you fully level up a weapon, you will gain access to the weapon tuning feature which will allow you to make more precise adjustments to the weapon’s stats through its attachments; use it to upgrade the weapon more specifically to your preferences.

The best Modern Warfare 2 M4 build, from perks to loadout
Our picks for the best Modern Warfare 2 M4 side yards, parks, and loadouts are:
- Base Perk 1: Overkill (unlocked at level 21)
- Basic Perk 2: Scavenger (unlocked at level 26)
- Additional benefit: Quick hands (unlocked at level 8)
- Ultimate Perk: Quick Fix (unlocked at level 44) or Ghost (unlocked at level 52)
- Secondary: Haste 12 (unlocked at level 9)
- Tactic: Stun Grenade (unlocked at level 15)
- Lethal: Proximity Mine (unlocked at level 1)
- Field Upgrade: Ammunition Box (unlocked at level 16)
Both of these basic perks are intended to make your life easier during the quick combats you end up finding yourself in. Overkill is required to use two primary weapons, while Scavenger is the classic ability to grab ammo from corpses.
For the added benefit, we recommend Fast Hands, which allows you to reload, use equipment, and switch to your secondary weapon faster, especially when carrying a second primary weapon.
As a maximum buff, Ghost is a great option considering the duration until it activates. By having it, you become invisible to enemy UAVs, man-portable radars, and heartbeat sensors.
Alternatively, another good choice is Quick Fix, which increases your survivability during combat and activates health regeneration on kills.
While you can’t manually equip them into a custom perk pack until you reach the required levels, you can choose the immediately available Assault perk pack, which contains all the recommended perks except Quick Hands.
Instead, you’ll get Hardline, a valuable alternative that will help you earn kill streaks with one less kill or 125 fewer points, depending on whether you’ve chosen to earn streaks through kills or scoring.
Expedite 12 is a powerful shotgun that serves quite well as a secondary to use when changing areas or hunting enemies in tight hallways. It’s a “one shot, one kill” type weapon.
As for your tactics, the stun grenade is extremely useful in situations where you need to enter a room or hallway. Throw it there and enter holding Expedite 12.
Since the stun grenade is not accessible until level 15, you can choose a flash grenade that will serve a similar purpose, blinding the enemy instead of stunning and slowing them.
The Proximity Mine is now useful when you want to take advantage of some cover and the M4’s ability to reach distant enemies. Place it near one of the entrances where you are to protect yourself.
Alternatively, the frag grenade can be effective for clearing rooms or a more offensive playstyle in general.
Finally, the Ammo Box is a good choice since you won’t have a larger magazine for the M4. Also replenish your tactical and lethal explosives.
Since you don’t gain access to the Ammo Box until level 16, the Portable Radar unlocked at level 5 may be a good option until then, but ultimately the choice of Field Upgrade depends entirely on your preferences: choose what that you find best suits your needs. playing style.
