Cold resistance is an essential part of survival in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and one that you face from the beginning of the game.
Whether you’re still on the first Sky Island or braving the blizzard around Rito Village, you’ll want to traverse Hyrule prepared. Entering a cold area with no protective heat will cause Link to quickly lose health and give you a Game Over screen.
Fortunately, there are several ways to give Link cold resistance in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, including recipes for elixirs and cold-resistant foods.

When do you need cold resistance in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?
Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to see when Link needs to finish or eat: Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t hesitate to tell you when you’re causing Link to suffer. Not only will the thermometer at the bottom right of the main screen be oscillating to the extreme, but you will also see Link shaking on the weapons and armor screen.
Another useful tip is to simply observe your surroundings. It’s snowing? It’ll probably be cold then.
Cold resistant food recipes in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Extreme cold is one of the first natural hazards you’ll encounter in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, right after falling to your death by drowning. No one said that Hyrule was not a dangerous place…
To the right (east) of Great Sky Island is a mountainous area where the Gutanbac Shrine is located. To get there you need to learn how to prepare cold-resistant foods.
Fortunately, this Sky Island comes with plenty of hot peppers; just collect a few and throw them in a pot. The game will automatically create a dish for Link to enjoy!
There are many ways to eat a pepper, as the saying goes. First, mix five in a pot for a whopping 12:30 minutes of protection. However, if you want to play with the theme, you can mix them with apples, raw meat… the culinary world is at your fingertips.
Cold resistant elixir recipes in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Elixirs are a way to use monster parts to further Link’s quest to find the princess in another castle. You probably won’t find them until later in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as you’ll be missing the corresponding bug to shuffle them.
You can find butterflies in the wild, if you have the patience to sneak up on them, or (more likely) you can buy them from the Beedle in Tabantha Bridge Stable.
Once you have a Summerwing Butterfly (Eldin Canyon or Gerudo Highlands) or Warm Darner (Akkala Highlands or Faron Grasslands), go ahead and mix it with your favorite monster parts to create a Spicy Elixir.
The best cold resistant armor in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
As we have already mentioned, the trip to Gutanbac Shrine on Big Sky Island is the first test of resistance to cold. In this sanctuary the ability to Ascend is learned; Luckily, there’s a conveniently placed item from an old, dead, and hollowed-out tree, right in front of you as you exit the shrine! Guess what they put it there for?
If you guessed “an opportunity to test the Ascend ability in the wild”, you were correct! Climb up and grab the Archaic Warm Greaves, which offer two points of defense and one point (out of two) of cold resistance.
While the Archaic Warm Greaves will get you through most of Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll eventually discover that some places are downright frigid and Link needs to double up on his down jacket.
Fortunately, they can be found where the world is coldest: Rito Village, which is suffering from the adverse effects of climate change: a sudden and persistent snowstorm.
For the best cold-resistant armor set, head to the Brazen Beak armor shop in Rito Village and purchase the Snowquil set for a total of 2,150 rupees; this includes the Snowquill headdress, Snowquill tunic, and Snowquill pants. However, you only need two pieces of cold-resistant armor, so if you’re short on money, the tunic is the cheapest of the three.
However, if you really like to waste rupees, the Ruby Circlet in the Gerudo Shelter does exactly the same thing as the Snowquill Headdress, but costs twice as much at 1,300 rupees.
