Elden Ring Story The Shadow of the Erdtree

As seen in the trailer, Shadow of the Erdtree follows the story of the “kind” Miquella, Malenia’s twin brother. Miquella is the demigod offspring of Queen Marika and Radagon. The twins were born with a curse, with Miquella condemned to be eternally young and never become an adult.

You will follow in Miquella’s footsteps in the Land of Shadow area in the DLC, just as you followed the Sieges of Grace in the base game.

The DLC area has been confirmed to occupy the same space as Lands Between, but has been physically disconnected. And “getting there will involve some sort of warping” (thanks, IGN).

The story will also involve Queen Marika and what she did in this land of shadows, and what led Miquella to follow her to the Land of Shadows.

Additionally, Mesmer is the man in red seen in the first DLC trailer and is an important figure that rivals other demigods in Shadow of the Erdtree. He has a key shadow element, which is also a major theme throughout the DLC.

Delving into Miquella’s past could help us understand where the DLC’s story is headed. It begins when Miquella wants to become an adult, so she used Haligtree, the Legacy Dungeon from the last game where players fight Malenia. She lay here in a cocoon, aiming to age in parallel with the tree, binding herself by watering the tree with her blood. She intended for Haligtree to become an Erdtree, but before she could complete her task, Miquella fell into a deep sleep.

Miquella’s cocoon is actually discovered in Elden Ring after defeating Mohg Lord of Blood. Mohg stole the cocoon, transformed into blood, entered it and tried to communicate with Miquella through her dreams. When we see the cocoon, Miquella’s arm is visible: now adult-sized, but unresponsive.

As mentioned in IGN’s interview with Miyazaki, “The cocoon and arm you saw at the beginning of the trailer… is actually the entry point to the Land of Shadows where players will enter the DLC area.”

We don’t yet know how else this story will influence the story of Shadow of the Erdtree, but let’s at least hope Miquella extends her kindness to how easy she is on us poor Tarnished…

Miyazaki talks about Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree with Eurogamer.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree: everything we know

Thanks to Eurogamer’s own interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki, we got some juicy details about what to expect from the upcoming Elden Ring DLC. Be sure to read it for a full breakdown, but in summary, here’s everything we know about the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for Elden Ring:

  • It’s FromSoftware’s largest expansion yet: Miyazaki said this DLC is “our largest expansion to date in terms of overall volume.”
  • The DLC takes place on a brand new map larger than Limgrave. Although new areas await you, Shadow of the Erdtree includes a similar structure to the original game. There are field areas, legacy dungeons, and other dungeons of different scales. Miyazaki says: “In terms of pure surface area, you could think of something bigger than even Limgrave in the base game.”
  • Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has not provided new material. Regarding George RR Martin’s involvement, Miyazaki explains: “It’s essentially the same as with the base game. The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is based on a part of the original mythos he wrote for us. It’s not a completely new mythos that he wrote. specifically for Shadow of the Erdtree, it hasn’t created anything new that has informed the design of the DLC. It’s simply another part of the original story that we thought was appropriate to count as a new expansion.”
  • There are over 10 new boss fights – some were glimpsed in the trailer – but get ready to prove your Tarnished power against 10 new bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree.
  • Eight new weapon categories have been added: In addition to new weapons, equipment and skills, we get eight new weapon categories to experience.
  • It may be as difficult as the Malenia: RIP boss fight for all of us, as Shadow of the Erdtree continues FromSoftware’s tradition of brutal challenges in DLC. Miyazaki explains: “We wanted to offer these challenging encounters and these menacing threats, and to achieve that, we wanted to give the player a lot of freedom of approach. We wanted them to feel free in how to choose and when to choose.” address and address these difficulties.”
  • The field and dungeon areas are better interconnected – we’ve seen haunted grasslands, fiery caverns, and mystical ruins in the trailer – but when it comes to the notable division between open fields and isolated dungeon areas in the base game, Miyazaki says that in the DLC “We wanted to go deeper and offer denser, richer level design, combining these types of design a little more fluidly. Of course, there will be large open areas, of course, there will be legacy dungeons, but we’ve also experimented with something a little more in-between to provide a more diverse gaming experience.”
  • The poisonous swamps are coming back, because of course they are. Miyazaki explains that the poisonous swamps were “actually a point of introspection for me after creating the base game. It was only after creating it that I realized that I really like creating poisoned swamps… So, maybe, when the players reach the poisoned swamp in the DLC, they will feel a bit of this retrospection.” I’m not sure if it’s anything resembling hindsight that I’ll personally feel, but each to their own.
