Kargil Vijay Diwas: What is the history of the Kargil war?

8 Facts About Kargil Vijay Diwas

1. The Kargil War took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, along the Line of Control (LoC). The Pakistan Army sent its soldiers on behalf of the intruders during the winter to seize the area. Their main objective was to sever connections between Ladakh and Kashmir and create tensions on the Indian border. Let us tell you that the intruders at that time were above while the Indians were below and that is why it was easy for them to attack. Finally, war broke out between the two sides. Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control which is LOC and entered the Indian controlled area.

Did you know that Kargil was part of the Baltistan district of Ladakh before the partition of India in 1947 and was separated by the COL after the First Kashmir War (1947-1948)?

2. On May 3, 1999, Pakistan started this war when it had infiltrated into the high altitudes of the rocky mountainous region of Kargil with around 5,000 soldiers and captured it. When the Indian government received information about it, the Indian Army launched “Operation Vijay” to push back the intruders who had treacherously occupied the Indian territory.

Let us tell you that in 1971 i.e. before the Kargil War, India and Pakistan fought a war which led to the formation of a separate country i.e. Bangladesh.

3. Do you know the scenario before the Kargil War? In 1998-1999, during winters, the Pakistani army secretly began training and sending troops near Kargil to dominate the region with the aim of reclaiming the Siachen Glacier. Furthermore, the Pakistan army exclaimed that they were not Pakistani soldiers but mujahideen. In reality, Pakistan wanted international attention on the dispute so that it could generate pressure on the Indian Army to withdraw its army from the Siachen Glacier region and force India to negotiate the Kashmir dispute.

4. The story behind the war: After the Indo-Pak war of 1971 there have been many military conflicts. Both countries conducted nuclear tests in 1998, further escalating tensions. To calm the situation in February 1999, the two countries signed the Lahore Declaration, promising to provide a peaceful, bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict.

5. The infiltration of Pakistan Armed Forces and paramilitary forces across the Line of Control into the territory of the Indian side was codenamed “Operation Badr.” Did you know that their main objective was to break the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and withdraw the Indian army from the Siachen Glacier? At the same time, Pakistan believed that creating any kind of tension in this area would help turn the Kashmir issue into an international issue, leading to a quick solution.

The Kargil War was one in which a war was fought between two nuclear states.

6. The IAF for the ground attack used MiG-2I, MiG-23, MiG-27, Jaguars and Mirage-2000 aircraft. Primarily for air interception with a secondary ground attack role, the MiG-21 was built. To attack the ground targets, the MiG-23 and 27 were optimized. Several Pakistani targets were attacked. Therefore, IAF MiG-21s and Mirage 2000s were used extensively in Operation Safed Sagar during this war.

7. A large number of rockets and bombs were used in this war. Around two lakh fifty thousand shells, bombs and rockets were fired. Approximately 5,000 artillery shells, mortar bombs and rockets were fired daily from 300 guns, mortars and MBRL, while 9,000 shells were fired on the day Tiger Hill was recaptured. It is said that this was the only war after World War II in which such a number of bombing raids were carried out on the enemy army. Finally, India won a decisive victory.

8.The conflict was fought over rugged terrain and at extremely high altitudes; some of the stations were over 18,000 feet high, making it possibly the most difficult conflict in recent times.

But as it is always said of our Indian soldiers: “HARD TIMES DON’T LAST, HARD MEN LAST.”
